Privacy policy

Verbatio is a language-learning app that turns reading into vocabulary practice. It is built to work offline and to keep your data on your own device. This policy explains exactly what the app does and does not do with your information. It is written to be read, not to be endured, so it says plainly what happens rather than hiding behind legal filler.

The short version

  • Verbatio has no servers of its own and no user accounts. There is nowhere for us to collect your data, because we operate no backend that receives it.
  • Your books, highlights, dictionary lookups and flashcards are stored locally on your device.
  • The app contains no advertising and no analytics or tracking software.
  • If you choose to turn on sync, your flashcards are saved to a private area of your own Google Drive. They travel between your devices through your Drive, and pass through no system we control.
  • Purchases are handled by Google Play or the App Store, and by RevenueCat, our subscription-management provider. Neither we nor RevenueCat receive your payment card details.

What stays on your device

Everything central to using Verbatio is local. The books you import or download, the words you look up, the dictionary packs you install, your flashcards and their review schedule, and your settings all live in the app's storage on your device. None of this is transmitted to us, because we have no service to transmit it to.

Device permissions the app may request

Verbatio asks for a permission only at the moment a feature needs it, and only for that feature:

  • Files and documents - so you can open EPUB and PDF books you already have. Files you pick are read locally; they are not uploaded anywhere.
  • Camera - only if you use the feature that photographs printed text to look up a word. The image is processed on your device.
  • Photo library - only if you import a picture of text for the same purpose. Selected images are processed on your device.

Verbatio does not use your location. You may notice a location entry in the app's technical permissions; it is present only because a third-party sign-in library references that capability. The app itself never requests or uses your location, and no location data is collected.

Optional Google Drive sync

Sync is off unless you turn it on. When you connect Google Drive, Verbatio signs you in through Google and asks for a single, narrow permission: access to its own hidden application-data folder on your Drive (the drive.appdata scope). This is a private area that only Verbatio can see; the app cannot read your documents, photos or other files on your Drive, and does not ask to.

Inside that folder the app stores your flashcards and reading state, so they can appear on your other devices running Verbatio. This data moves between your Google account and your devices. It does not pass through any server operated by Verbatio, because none exists. Your use of Google Drive is also governed by Google's Privacy Policy. You can disconnect sync at any time in the app's settings, and you can remove the stored data from your Google account at any time.

Purchases and subscriptions

Verbatio offers optional paid features. Purchases are processed by the store you installed the app from: Google Play or the Apple App Store. Subscription status is managed on our behalf by RevenueCat, Inc. The store handles the payment; we never see your card number or billing details. RevenueCat receives a purchase identifier supplied by the store so it can tell the app whether a subscription is active. RevenueCat's handling of that data is described in the RevenueCat Privacy Policy, Google's in the Google Privacy Policy, and Apple's in the Apple Privacy Policy.

Dictionary downloads

Dictionary packs are downloaded from public file hosting (GitHub release assets) when you install them. Downloading a pack sends the ordinary technical information any file download involves, such as your device's IP address, to that host. It carries nothing about you, your books or your lookups, and once a pack is installed it works entirely offline.

Children

Verbatio is a general-audience learning tool and is not directed at children under 13. Because the app collects no personal information and has no accounts, it does not knowingly gather data from anyone, including children.

Your control over your data

Because your data lives on your device and in your own Google Drive, you hold it directly. You can delete individual flashcards and books in the app, disconnect Drive sync, remove Verbatio's app-data folder from your Google account, or uninstall the app to remove its local data from your device.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new date at the top. Material changes will be reflected in the app or its store listing.
